Abstract

Evaluation of the overall student performance in the Residential College (RC) System of the University of Macau (UM) is reported under the “4-in-1”* education model which commenced in August 2014. The evaluation methodology included the grade points average (GPA), the counselling cases, sports competition, employment data, plus specially-designed surveys to measure the learning outcomes of the competencies** that the RC education focused on. Particularly noteworthy is this study included undergraduate students with and without the RC experience so a comparison of the two groups of students can be made.

The major findings show a positive and encouraging trend in the impact of RC education on students is significant and noticeable, despite the fact that the RC system was launched only two years ago. Some highlights of the study are: 1) the five areas of competencies that RC nurtures have clearly shown the learning outcome; 2) a significant correlation of academic achievement in terms of cumulative GPA with RC experience is found, also for the low-performance students (GPA<2) RC experience clearly helps students to improve more effectively; 3) the pastoral care and the peer support that students received in the RCs have resulted in a significant decrease of counselling cases; 4) team spirit cultivated for student athletes show its impact on the awards; 5) employment profile in recent years show steady improvement. The values of the RC experience on the students’ overall achievements are reflected in this evaluation report. Conclusions are drawn to reflect the impact of the “Community and Peer Education” on the growth of students, which, in turn, supports the vision of the University of Macau who has pioneered the unique 4-in-1 education model together with the university-wide RC System.

*4-in1 Education Model: It includes “discipline”, “general”, “research & internship” and “community & peer” education. Undergraduate students must receive passing grades in all four area before they can graduate.
** Competencies: The five competencies in the experiential learning of the RC education are: “healthy living”, “interpersonal relationship & teamwork”, “leadership & service”, “culture engagement”, and “citizenship with global perspective”.

Prof. Haydn H. D. Chen’s education background has taken him through prestigious schools via the Tsing Hua University (Taiwan) for his BS degree, then the MS and PhD in the Department of Materials Science, Northwestern University in US. Dr. Chen’s professional career commenced with a Research Associate appointment at the Argonne National Laboratory before joining the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) (1978 to 2000). Since 2000, Dr. Chen has spent over 16 years in teaching, research and academic administration in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau, in the capacity as Chair Professor, Head of the Department, Vice President for Student Affairs or President of Tunghai University. These experience put him in a very unique group of educators who have held key positions as an academic faculty and concurrently an academic administrator in four universities across the Pacific ocean.

Having supervised over 50 MS and PhD students and worked closed with more than 20 research associates and visiting scholars in four universities, Prof. Chen has authored or co-authored over 300 journal articles and delivered more than 200 technical presentations. At UIUC, Dr. Chen’s research focused primarily on metals and alloys in which he pioneered x-ray diffraction studies of kinetic processes of ordering or coarsening in technologically important Ni-based super-alloys, Fe-based shape memory alloys and Al-based light metal alloys. Dr. Chen and his team had invented a grazing incidence x-ray diffraction method for the nondestructive measurements of residual stresses in thin films; this technical paper was downloaded/viewed over 8000 times, and cited over 130 times. Further, in a period of 10 years, Dr. Chen had led, as the Director of a Collaborative Access Team, with partnership between UIUC and national laboratories, industrial firms for a major project to have designed and constructed two sectors of beamlines, along with six experimental stations, at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. These instruments are rated most outstanding apparatus at APS today.

At the City University of Hong Kong, Dr. Chen has expanded his research into thin films and coatings with particular emphasis on electric ceramics such as ferroelectrics, nitrides, etc. Over a span of four years more than 60 articles were published which represent the most highly cited collection of papers. As the Head of the Applied Physics and Materials Department at CityU, Dr. Chen has led the Department to become the flag ship of the materials program in Hong Kong and propelled the advancement of world ranking of the university. Dr. Chen continued to maintain scholarly work during the 8 year period as the President of Tunghai University in Taiwan. At the University of Macau, Dr. Chen was responsible for the establishment of the Graduate Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering and supervised the first cohort of doctoral degree students. This was in addition to his official duties as the Vice Rector for Student Affairs with primary responsibilities for the creation of a Residential College system for experiential collegiate learning of soft skills.

Prof. Chen’s trajectory of research on materials science has won himself the Humboldt Research Award in Germany (2000) and Award for Outstanding Scholar in Taiwan (2005-2010). He is a Fellow of ASM-International since 1989, a Fellow of Japan Society for Promotion of Science and a Fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. He was chief editor and key reviewers of many journals and participated actively in several professional societies.

Specifically, the event will facilitate the sharing and discussion of innovative practices that have emerged from Teaching Development Grant-funded projects and projects conducted by Teaching Excellence Award Winners across the eight publicly funded universities in Hong Kong. Bringing together experienced teachers who have pursued innovations in pedagogy, assessment, curriculum design and flexible learning, the event will provide an opportunity for universities in Hong Kong to learn from each other, and to share their commitment to achieving teaching and learning excellence in an ever-changing educational context. Alongside input sessions, the event will also feature sessions that provide opportunities for future teaching and learning collaboration across universities, including ‘Speed Dating’ Poster Sessions and the Join-the-Conversation Roundtables.

Abstract

This Teaching Exchange Fellowship Scheme (TEFS) was focused on ‘ePortfolio as tool for reflective, autonomous learning and the assessment of it.” Dr Sobko has been working on a TDG project “ePortfolio – developing a discipline-based tool for reflective, autonomous learning” and the TEFS was a well-suited complimentary part of the project. The outgoing visit was to another reputable University (University of Auckland), whith a group, working on a similar topic. The purpose of visit was to compare practices and to evaluate the currently running ePortfolio platform (HKU) and to further improve it. The HKU ePortfolio platform, adopted during the pilot project, positions ePortfolios, as a personalised digital collection of artefacts, which are organised in a purposeful way to assess growth over time and scaffold through continuous formative feedback from the tutor. The TEFS experience contributed to the final improved version the ePortfolio, which provides a unique virtual learning environment, rich and diverse learning experience, complementary to face-to-face modes of learning. This in turn will is expected to enhance students’ experiential and lifelong learning process. The finalised ePortfolio platform is now available for the general use, not only at the Faculty level, but also to any tutor/student at HKU.

Grants for overseas reciprocal visits through ‘Teaching Exchange Fellowship Scheme’
To promote HKU staff to bring in new ideas and teaching methods to improve teaching through interaction with overseas university teachers, HKU will award up to $50,000 for reciprocal staff visits. This funding is provided through the “Teaching Exchange Fellowship Scheme”. The seminar provides an overview of this funding scheme and information on the application process. Staff will be guided on how to go about planning exchange visits to enhance the scholarship of teaching at HKU, which is the aim of the scheme. It will explain, and also showcase examples, on how this funding opportunity can be used by HKU teaching staff to share experience and to collaborate on teaching and curriculum development initiatives with overseas reputable universities through reciprocal visits.

The seminar is open to all teaching staff interested in finding out more about this Teaching Exchange Fellowship Scheme. Staff will be provided an overview of the scheme, how to lodge an application, the key objectives, amounts they can apply for, eligibility and advice in preparing an application. Staff who are thinking about applying are strongly encouraged to attend. Staff who attended the last seminar but found they had insufficient time to make overseas contacts, or who are thinking of planning ahead, in time for the second round (having a March 17th, 2016 closing date), would also find the seminar useful. Abstract

Dr Richard Wu and Ms Julienne Jen, both from the Department of Professional Legal Education, Faculty of Law, have successfully applied for Teaching Fellowship Exchange grants recently, looking into different aspects of experiential learning in the context of professional legal education.

In the recent years, experiential learning has become popular not only in law schools but also other professional disciplines in the University. Nowadays, apart from strengthening their knowledge base, gaining of practical skills is also one major aim of University education, in order to equip our students in an international competitive environment. Through sharing of their experience and ideas, the speakers wish to share and promote different forms of experiential learning at the University.

Dr Richard Wu visited the Melbourne Law School and exchanged experience with Professor Andrew Godwin, who developed a “Transactional Law” approach in legal education. At the sharing session, Dr Wu and Professor Godwin will introduce and share their experience and strategies in implementing this “Transactional Law” approach model in the different law subjects which they teach, and how to expand this concept across jurisdictions.

Ms Julienne Jen is involved in teaching the Clinical Legal Education course at the University, which advocates the “learning through discipleship” model in professional legal education. Ms Jen visited several “Legal Clinics” run by the Monash University Law Faculty and obtained an insight into how the Legal Clinics were run, with the aim of further enhancing the Clinical Legal Education programme at the University. At the sharing session, Ms Jen will introduce the “learning through discipleship” model of teaching and share her experience and insights with a view to promoting such practice to other law curricula and professional disciplines.

About the Speaker
Dr Richard Wai-sang Wu, Associate Professor, LLB (HKU) PCLL (HKU), BSc (Economics), LLM (London), MBA (Warwick), LLB, LLM (Peking), LLM (IT and Telecommunications Law) (Strathclyde) and PhD (London). Dr Wu teaches Property Transactions, China Practice and Professional Practice in the Faculty of Law, University of Hong Kong. He is active in interdisciplinary legal research, and his current research focuses on four major areas: Legal Profession, Legal Education and Legal Ethics in Hong Kong and China; Telecommunications Law and Policy in Hong Kong; Real Estate Law and Practice in Hong Kong and China; and Chinese Banking Law. Over the years, Dr Wu has published refereed articles in international journals and contributed chapters to academic books published in China and overseas. He has also presented papers at numerous international conferences. In recent years, Dr Wu has succeeded in numerous research grant applications from both local and international funding bodies.

Prof Andrew Godwin is a Senior Lecturer and Director in Transactional Law, Director of Studies in Banking and Finance Law and the Associate Director of the Asian Law Centre of the Melbourne Law School. Professor Godwin spent over 15 years in full-time practice, 10 of which were spent in Shanghai. Professor Godwin’s teaching and research interests include finance and insolvency law, securities disclosure, regulation of legal profession and Chinese law. Professor Godwin also trained lawyers and regulators in the area of drafting and negotiation. Professor Godwin is a regular contributor to academic and professional publication.

Ms Julienne Jen, LLB (London), PCLL (HKU), LLM (London) is a solicitor admitted in the High Court of Hong Kong and the Supreme Court of England and Wales. Prior to joining the University, Ms. Jen practised as a solicitor in the litigation department of an international law firm in Hong Kong. She currently teaches the PCLL and is a strong advocate of experiential learning. She coordinates the Civil Litigation course in the PCLL curriculum and adopts a case file and transactional approach in teaching. She is also involved in adopting the “learning through discipleship” approach in the Clinical Legal Education course and pioneered the use of “Standardised Clients” in the teaching of her courses. Ms. Jen was the recipient of the Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award in 2014.

Abstract

Undergraduate students at HKU are increasingly exposed to a wealth of dynamic and exciting learning experiences. Using a developmental approach, Academic Advisors can guide undergraduate students in strategically navigating and planning across their curriculum opportunities to gain maximum benefit from these opportunities. A range of challenges may arise including, among others, communicating academic standards, encouraging student agency and ‘stretch’, and referring to other student support services.

In this Join-the-Conversation, four panel speakers will share with us their stories in engaging, inspiring and guiding students to maximise their learning and development opportunities at HKU. The two discussants will also share their perspectives. A panel-led discussion will then follow. We welcome all colleagues to join. Colleagues with an academic advising role or those who are involved in providing guidance to students in their academic and personal development may find this event particularly relevant.

About the Panellists
Dr. Michael Botelho has been working at HKU for 21 years and has been actively involved in the design, development and implementation of a range of curriculum innovations and reforms in problem-based learning (PBL), e-learning, simulation training and competency assessments. He is the former Academic Advising co-ordinator in the Faculty of Dentistry. He has published and presented on dental education in journals and at conferences locally and internationally. He has conducted workshops on PBL, facilitator training, problem writing and standards descriptors for clinical skills performance. He is the 2015 Hong Kong UGC teaching award recipient.

Dr. Gary Harfitt is Associate Professor and Assistant Dean in the Faculty of Education. He is a former Academic Advising Coordinator in the Faculty of Education. He also served as Programme Director of the 4 double degrees in the Faculty from 2010-2014 and since 2015 has been Assistant Dean for Experiential Learning (EL). He has been involved with integrating experiential learning programmes into Undergraduate and Postgraduate teacher training courses including a pioneering EL ‘block’ for all PGDE full-time students this year. As Assistant Dean he has supported the setting up of multiple students’ EL projects and EL credit-bearing courses in the HK community as well as other locations such as China, Thailand, Australia, Cambodia, India, Vietnam, Nepal and Taiwan.

Dr. Julia Kuehn is Associate Professor and Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in the Faculty of Arts. She is also the current Chair of the Academic Advising Committee. Julia has been involved in Academic Advising ever since it was inaugurated, from getting it off the ground in the Faculty of Arts (being on the committee that decided to make all teachers in Arts academic advisors) to looking into improving the system over the years (with a new sign-up system from 2016-17 that gives students more agency in choosing their advisor). As Associate Dean, Julia has also overseen EL initiatives in Arts. With a Faculty that has 22 major and 31 minor programmes, an open curriculum with many choices and a large student body, advising Bachelor of Arts students is a huge challenge as no student is the same. Julia is hoping to learn from today’s discussion as much as she may be able to contribute.

Miss Nicole Tavares is Senior Lecturer in the Division of English Language Education at the Faculty of Education of HKU. Her expertise is in the areas of 21st century skills learning, using educational technologies and social media in teacher professional development, language-across-the-curriculum initiatives, interactive assessment, mistake-management and collaborative learning – all with a prime focus on student-centredness, learner motivation, teacher-student communication and the student voice. Her 2013 co-authored article published in Computers & Education titled ‘From Moodle to Facebook: Exploring students’ motivation and experiences in online communities’ has achieved 98 citations to date. For her commitment to and innovations in teaching and learning, she was presented with the Distinguished Teacher Award (2006), Knowledge Exchange (Team) Award (2010), Teacher Effectiveness Award for the highest average SETL ratings in undergraduate programmes (2011–2014) and Outstanding Teaching Award (2015) by her Faculty as well as the Outstanding Teaching Award in 2015 by HKU. She has been an Academic Advisor for a few years and is keen on seeking ways to play a more effective role in this capacity.

Abstract:

Dr. Chui has applied the university teaching exchange fellowship scheme (TEFS) and visited the School of Computing (SoC) in the National University of Singapore (NUS) during April -May 2016. NUS is one of the best universities in the field of computing and information system, and their School of Computing hosts a number of cutting-edge pedagogical projects in computing education. In this seminar, Dr. Chui will share his exchange experience in NUS. The areas of focus in this exchange project include the management of in-class activities of flipped learning, the use of scalable online gamification platform, and the enhancement of online instructional materials with visualization techniques in computing education. Some inter-university collaborative teaching initiatives are also being arranged in this exchange project.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Chui is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Hong Kong. He is interested in pedagogical research in computing education and aimed to provide high-quality computing education to students in primary, secondary and tertiary levels. He was selected for the University Outstanding Teaching Award (Individual Award) of the University of Hong Kong in 2015/16. He was selected for the Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award (Individual Award) of the Faculty of Engineering in 2012/13. He has also received the Teaching Excellence Award in the Department of Computer Science in 2011/12, 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15.

Abstract:

Medical students are keen to engage in service learning – going abroad to gain broader perspectives on health care and contributing to projects which can make a difference in people’s lives. Service learning supports the experiential aspect of global health which ‘places a priority on improving health and achieving equity in health for all people worldwide by emphasizing transnational health issues, determinants, and solutions’ (Koplan et al, 2009). But does the experience of global health require globetrotting? Do students necessarily need to go abroad to achieve the same outcomes? Experiences at the medical schools of The University of Hong Kong and the University of British Columbia illustrate how the principles of global health can be framed in local service learning initiatives.

About the Speaker:

Dr Julie Chen holds a joint appointment in the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care, and the Bau Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education. She is engaged in the development, implementation and evaluation of new initiatives in the medical curriculum to encourage early learning of professionalism and humanism in medicine. Conference Summary

The International Conference – Beyond the Formal Curriculum in Universities was held on 30-31 August 2016 by the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL), Professional Development and Capacity Building for Residential Education (ResEd) Project, and Hall Education Development (HED) Project at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). The conference concentrated on hall and residential education, including its history, challenges, role in skill development and personal growth, and the future directions of such education in Hong Kong and around the world. With Keynote speakers coming in from Cambridge, Harvard, and the National University of Singapore (NUS), over 200 academics and professionals attended, coming from other higher education institutions in Hong Kong and around Asia.

The event began with some warm welcoming remarks from Professor Peter Mathieson, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong, followed by those of Professor Sandra Tsang, Chairperson of the Committee on Halls, and the Conference Chairperson and Warden of the RC Lee Hall, Dr Robert Chung.

Reverend Duncan Dormor, Dean of St John’s College at the University of Cambridge, was the first to take the stage with his keynote presentation “‘Jewel in the Crown?’ The Oxbridge College: Its Origin, Character and Future”. Touching on the history of the college model in higher education, he highlighted how collegiality in the Oxbridge residential colleges – inclusive of college allegiance, belongingness, interdisciplinary learning and relationship building – acted in combination with a plethora of extracurricular and academic opportunities to emphasize and develop a strong character and college spirit, amidst a rich array of activities, clubs, traditions, tutorial systems and research opportunities.

The next session, titled “From Present to Past: The Evolution of Hall/Residential Education”, was chaired by Dr Kaimin Shih, Warden of the Suen Chi Sun Hall. The presentations focused on past developments in residential education up to the present day, in both HKU and at the University of Macau (UM). The HKU presentations included an overview of our halls in following the Oxbridge residential model, the establishment of residential colleges and how they compare to traditional halls, and the continued challenge of promoting internalization in halls where Cantonese is the dominant language, while the UM presentation explained how its newly established Residential College System helped students attain overall learning outcomes. Presenters included Dr Eric Chong (Warden of St John’s College, HKU), Professor Haydn Chen (Vice Rector of Student Affairs at UM), Ms Rainbow Wong (Acting Deputy Master of the Chi Sun College, HKU) and Mr Kevin Yung (Senior Resident Tutor in Simon KY Lee Hall).

In the afternoon, Professor Kenneth Leung, Warden of Morrison Hall, led a panel discussion on residential education around the world, aptly titled “Hall and Residential Education in a Global Perspective”. Reverend Duncan Dormor and Professor Hayden Chen returned on stage as panelists and were joined by Mr Renaldo Michael Pearson (Academic Coordinator of Winthrop House at Harvard University) and Professor Adekunle Adeyeye (current and founding College Master of the Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) at NUS). The discussion began with each panelist outlining the hall system at their respective universities, and followed with an in-depth exchange about ongoing challenges, which included the need to embrace diversity of both student and staff in halls, the sustainability of residential models and the development and assessment of generic competencies. The panelists concluded with a unanimous agreement that the most rewarding aspect of their work was the opportunity to work closely with students and watch them in their growth and achievements.

The last session of the day was chaired by Dr Siu Man Ng, Warden of the Simon KY Lee Hall, titled “Hall and Residential Education in Hong Kong”. Presentations were focused on the current position of residential education in Hong Kong (with specific examples from HKU and Lingnan University). Some speakers presented student responses to surveys regarding residential education and hall life, with further suggestions made to address concerns raised by the surveys, such as the need to implement strategies targeted at nurturing self-care and independence of residents. Presenters included Professor Annie Chan (Warden of the William MW Mong and Bank of East Asia Hall, and Associate Dean of Social Sciences at Lingnan University), Mr David Choi (undergraduate student at HKU), Dr Robert Chung, and Dr Maggie Zhao (Director of the Teaching and Learning Evaluation and Measurement Unit, HKU).

Day two kicked off with a keynote presentation by Professor Adekunle Adeyeye titled “Transmission from Home to College: Opportunities and Challenges in a Year One Residential College”. He began with stressing the need to assist freshmen students in transitioning into the university, and detailed a programme in RVRC that aimed to help students develop academic and co-academic learning components. The programme includes peer mentorships, industry dialogues and community building activities, and also provides regular fieldtrip and project opportunities for students to connect with a problem to integrate classroom learning and theory with reality and experiences. Going forward, Professor Adeyeye acknowledged the challenge of integrating the college’s program with the university’s, and the need to continue establishing the RVRC’s name and brand.

Professor Thomas Ng, Warden of the Lee Shau Kee Hall, chaired the next session titled “Measuring and Assessing Learning Experiences in Hall and Residential Education”. Discussions focused on the importance of residential education in developing soft skills and generic competencies, and the specific programs and activities offered at certain residences that promoted experiential learning, artistic exploration, and personal growth of resident students. Presenters included Dr Cecilia Chan (Head of Professional Development, CETL, HKU), Professor Spencer Benson (Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning Enhancement, UM), Dr Natalie Pang (Faculty in Residence at Crescent Hall, Nanyang Technological University), and Professor Greg Peterson (Fellow at the College of Alice & Peter Tan, NUS).

Representing Harvard’s Winthrop House, Mr Renaldo Michael Pearson was next to give his keynote presentation titled “Why Harry Potter Chose Harvard: A House System that Continues to Cultivate Top Talent”. He drew on the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as featured in the fictional Harry Potter series, to detail Harvard’s houses, residential system, and intermural activities. He also put particular emphasis on the organizational structure of the houses – inclusive of faculty deans, academics, and residential and non-residential tutors – and its irrefutable role in supporting the robust character building experiences and successful undertakings of Harvard’s students.

The conference concluded with a session titled “The Way Forward: Professionalization and Specialization”, chaired by Professor Raymond Cheung, Warden of the Lee Hysan Hall. Structured as a panel discussion, presenters discussed various pressing needs of residential halls, particularly in HKU. Multiple suggestions were made in regards to the continuing need for professional development, academic advising and staff training in residential education. Concerns regarding student discontinuation and suicide were also brought forth, with panelists urging the continued need to help students directly in coping with hall life stressors. Speakers included Dr Wilton Fok (Senior Resident Tutor of Suen Chi Sun Hall), Ms Katherine Wan (Head of the Academic Advising Office, HKU), Professor Anthony Yeh (Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Discontinuation, HKU), Ms Linda Yeung (Clinical Psychologist at the Centre of Development and Resources for Students (CEDARS), HKU), and Professor Paul Yip (Director of the Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention, HKU).

In his closing remarks, Dr Robert Chung emphasized the importance of continuing intellectual pursuits in hall and residential education, and expressed his enthusiasm in pursuing new endeavors with new collaborators. Echoing the word “Beyond” in the name of this maiden conference, Dr Chung looked towards the future and voiced his hope that everyone would continue their efforts in exploring what is next for hall and residential education, and can one day meet again to share more experiences, research and insights.
