Artificial Intelligence as a Service: Free Text Analysis Tools

By courtesy of IBM, we are making available two simple tools for text analysis:

(1) Personality Insights, which uses linguistic analytics and personality theory to infer attributes from a person’s unstructured text; and
(2) Tone Analyzer, which uses cognitive linguistic analysis methods to measure the emotional tone in text.

They are ready for your use on our platform. Please sign in with your HKU Portal ID to gain access. For students, these tools might be helpful for refining write-ups such as term papers and job application letters. Teachers might want to think about how these tools could be incorporated in their courses. Feel free to make good use of them. In fact, over 200 have already signed up.

Moodle looks So Different

moodle2 copyAesthetics is very much on our mind when we design online learning experience. That’s why our developers and designers have been working very hard with the E-learning Team of our Information Technology Services to make changes – big and small – to improve your Moodle experience.

A lot of you might have realized that our Moodle had a facelift – everything is (slightly) cleaner and clearer now, don’t you think? Some of our students noticed the change, and sent us comments and feedback – most of them are related to how much information should be shown on a single page, and how little tricks like sorting and searching might help them to locate a particular course. We really appreciate students’ input, and will continue to improve this learning management system.

Mentimeter – a web-based polling tool
It is one of our key missions is to introduce the latest technologies for effective learning and teaching.

In the previous academic year, we have been facilitating the use of an anonymous polling tool, Mentimeter, in some courses (sample cases are here). In view of the positive comments received, we will continue to provide support for free trials this year, as well as technical advice in case Departments/Faculties want to purchase their own licenses.

You may contact us through enquiry@teli.hku.hk for arrangement. Enjoy!

What transforms lectures into lessons learnt? Participation, perhaps. Small twists such as inviting students to provide short-written responses would allow for personalized learning in many ways, as suggested by Professor David Carless, Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) in the Faculty of Education, and Dr. David Pomfret, Chairperson of the Department of History. They gave a seminar on this subject on December 1st, 2015.

In Dr. Pomfret’s history class, students were prompted to write short responses to one question each time. For example,
· “What nation do you think you belong to? Why?”
· “Which do you think is more valuable – history in history books or history in movies?”

These questions invite personal participation and reflection, and are associated with issues to be addressed in the next class, where a summary of the graded responses would be presented by way of a springboard for discussions. The rewards of such a practice are manifold: it enables students to quickly connect learning materials with their personal experiences; and their participation keeps them motivated throughout the semester. Teachers may also gauge common prior knowledge (or misconceptions, sometimes) among students in a timely manner through students’ submissions. In other words, short-written responses facilitate closing the feedback loop in learning.

At the seminar, some teachers suggested inviting students to post their responses on online platforms such as Moodle as it is much faster, and allows everyone in class to view their peers’ submissions. That’s certainly one quick and easily doable way. However, if the teacher would like to have anonymous feedback, an audience response tool such as Mentimeter might serve the purpose better. Would you like to give it a try?

Dear Teacher/Staff,

(1) Tips in Teaching & Learning support – “My eLearning” tab of HKU Portal:

The “My eLearning” tab lists the courses of a teacher as registered in SIS and the Moodle courses that he/she requests explicitly (e.g. use one Moodle course to replace two courses created in Moodle according to SIS data).

Now in the “My eLearning” tab, the courses activated for student access are grouped and appear first before the group of not-yet activated courses. (For more information, please visit the Moodle Resources website at http://moodle-support.hku.hk/new-arrangement-my-elearning-tab-layout-teachers for more information).

(2) Moodle & Panopto training workshops

Moodle is the central learning management system supporting teachers to create online learning content.
Panopto supports teachers to do audio/video recording synchronized with PowerPoint slides and PC/Mac desktop display. Students can view the recordings through Moodle courses and search inside the recordings. A module Panopto unison lets teachers upload their existing video files for further editing. The lecture theatres upgraded after 2011 are equipped with PC/AV facilities for recording of lectures readily.

The following upcoming hands-on workshops in October are now open for your registration.

The course details can be found at http://moodle-support.hku.hk/training/ITS-all.

Dear teachers/staff,

(1) New Moodle function “Moodle Student Performance by Percentile

It shows the students’ performance in a Moodle course by 25th, 50th and 75th percentile according to the students’ results in the Moodle Gradebook. This provides information about the performance of the class and may help the teacher give appropriate advice to the students as the course is in progress.

More information about “Moodle Student Performance by Percentile” can be found at http://moodle-support.hku.hk/moodle-student-performance-percentile

The web page “Moodle Student Performance by Percentile” is accessible via HKU Portal -> “My eLearning” tab -> choose a Moodle course -> click the hyperlink in “Course specific information” section at the bottom of the web page.

Dear Teachers,

(A) The central learning management system Moodle lets teachers create online learning content to support teaching and learning.

In 2015-16, all Moodle courses created based on SIS data will include the following new features on the homepage of a Moodle course:
1. A Forum for discussion among the students and teachers/teaching assistants.
2. A shortcut for “Adding common functions” for teachers to easily add common activities to a Moodle course. The common activities are “Assignment”, “Turnitin Assignment”, “Forum” and “File”.
3. Four themes are now available on Moodle and teachers can change the look and feel of a Moodle course under the course settings page.

(B) The Lecture Capture Service Panopto supports teachers to do audio/video recording synchronized with PowerPoint slides and PC/Mac desktop display. Students can view the recordings through Moodle courses and search inside the recordings.

Dear Moodle Course Teachers,

To enhance performance of our learning management system, old Moodle courses will have to be offloaded to the Archive System. On July 15, 2015, all Moodle courses from the academic year 2013/14 (i.e., course code ended with “_2013″) will be frozen to initiate this moving process.

There are two pertinent issues that I would like to draw your attention to:

(1) To comply with section 41A(5) of the Copyright Ordinance, teachers should remove all copyrighted materials on their Moodle courses after 12 months of their uploading.
(2) Teachers will have “read-only” access to their respective archived courses for education purposes (e.g., to prepare for the next offering). They will not be able to make any changes to the content of the archived courses. Besides, students will have “read-only” access to the archived courses.
More details about the Archive System are shown in the FAQ section of the Moodle Resources Website http://moodle-support.hku.hk (click here to visit the FAQ).

If you would like to opt out of the archiving arrangement with good reasons, please send an email with detailed information about your course to eLearningTeam@hku.hk on or before July 15, 2015. Thank you.

Best Regards,
CP Lau

Recent MOOC Developments at HKU

The HKU Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) initiative continues its momentum. In addition to the successful conclusion of HKU02.1x: The Search for Vernacular Architecture of Asia, the E-learning Pedagogical Support Unit (EPSU) is working with the course teams on designing and running a few other MOOCs:

You can register for these HKU MOOCs at edx.org.

Recording available: Knowledge Gained from the First HKU MOOC

From September to December 2014, HKU’s first MOOC, HKU01x Epidemics, ran on the edX platform. Over 10,000 learners enrolled in the course. HKU01x course teachers and EPSU conducted a seminar titled Broadening Horizons: Knowledge gained, experiences shared and lessons learned from HKU’s first MOOC HKU01x Epidemics, in which the speakers explored various viewpoints arising from the course. The recorded seminar can be viewed here.

Hands-On Workshops on Moodle and Panopto Unison

A new function, Panopto Unison, is now available. Panopto Unison module allows teachers to upload their existing video files in other formats to the Panopto system and share the uploaded video with the students in a Moodle course.

A new hands-on workshop PAN-004 “Share existing video to a Moodle course using Panopto Unison” is scheduled among other workshops on Learning Management System (LMS) – Moodle and Lecture Capture Service (LCS) – Panopto. Details of workshops can be found in the online training schedule.

E-learning Consultancy

EPSU works closely with Faculties, Departments, programme teams and teachers on various e-learning initiatives, including flipped classroom, online learning modules and technology-enhanced assessment as well as analytics-informed course planning. For more information, please contact Ms Trudi Chan (Phone: 2241 5282; Email: trudi@hku.hk.)

Dear Moodle Course Teachers,

Moodle has been in place to support the University’s electronic teaching and learning since 2011. It is a good practice to offload the old courses to the Moodle Archive System to release the loading and storage on the production server for better performance.

ITS will move all Moodle courses of the academic year 2013-14 (i.e. course code ended with “_2013″) from the production Moodle system to the Archive System in the middle of July 2015. The Moodle courses being archived will be frozen on 3 July 2015 for moving.

After the move, students, teachers and course administrators still have the “Read-only” access to these archived courses via the “My eLearning” tab of HKU Portal. “Read-only” means that users could not change course contents nor make any submissions to assignments or forums. More details about the Archive System are shown at the FAQ section of the Moodle Resources website (click here to visit).

If there are good reasons that your courses should not be moved to the Archive System this July, please send us email with detailed information to eLearningTeam@hku.hk on or before 30 June 2015. Thank you for your attention.
