An Improved Teaching and Learning Module of Chinese Medicine On-site Field Trip Combining with On-line Moodle for the New Curriculum for Double Cohort BChinMed Students and Beyond

Abstract

The 3-3-4(6) curriculum reform and outcome-based approaches for student learning (OBASL) has been launched in The University of Hong Kong since 2008. The two key elements in HKU curriculum reform are experiential learning and e-learning. Field trip is a practical course for students to study Chinese Medicine in the wild while Moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an e-learning platform for teachers to design on-line course. The aim of the project is to implement a new teaching and learning module of Chinese Medicine by integrating field trip and on-line Moodle for the new curriculum of double cohort Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (BChinMed) students and beyond. Herbal plant pictures were collected by both teachers and students and were uploaded to Moodle. Moodle e-learning platform had been set up for BChinMed students to review and share what they learned during field trip. Self-test exercises were also set up to help students to prepare for the final test. Students gave positive comments to the e-learning platform by questionnaires.
