Assessment and Feedback

Enhancing Learning Effectiveness and Benchmarking Assessment Tasks in “ENGG1201: Engineering for Sustainable Development”

Abstract

The development of this project aims to critically review the course materials and assessments of ENGG1201, to fit the characteristics of the new 4-year curriculum engineering students. Timely and important topics for engineering students were further designed by integrating the industrial practices and challenges into the problem-based learning examples. In addition to new lecture contents, animations were developed to assist the visualization of certain complicated engineering systems, together with the in-course laboratory experiments. Quizzes and homework aiming for early-stage evaluation were implemented to assist students following the course and discovering potential learning difficulties. To obtain student feedback on course assessments, face-to-face interviews were conducted for 60 students (37.5% of the class size) of the same class. The interviews were conducted with a set of questions about course assessments, including in-course and final exam activities, and also allowed students to express their course experiences after knowing their own course marks. The analysis of interview outcomes has led to 11 findings summarized in the project deliverables.
