Internationalisation of Teaching and Learning

Cross-institutional Online PBL in Chinese Medicine Education

Abstract

It is a cross-institutional education innovation project led by HKU and collaborated with Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (CDUTCM). We designed an online problem-based learning (PBL) environment using Moodle and Panopto. We had 2 trials while the first one was the pilot. We encountered different challenges during the first implementation and suggested some solutions towards those challenges. Questionnaire survey was conducted in the second trial. The result showed that significant differences about information technology competency and frequency of using Moodle were found between students from HKU and CDUTCM. Students from both institutions were positive towards the perceived usefulness and neutral response about the difficulties in use. They were positive towards the experience in learning with constructivist approach which formed the basis of PBL. Also, students were curious in their learning and showed exploratory learning behavior during the experience. This method showed the possibility of achieving internationalization by utilizing readily available resources in HKU. It was an international and innovative pilot project showing that the learning management system (Moodle) is affordable to achieve internationalization without the need to travel. Also, there will be a high flexibility in the communication and coordination between students from different institutes.
