Transforming Student Learning: Interdisciplinary Education – A Means to Enhance Teamwork and Learning among Students from Different Disciplines

Abstract

This was a multi-discipline, educational project designed to promote interdisciplinary learning among university students from different disciplines. A broadening course entitled Prevention of Family Violence provided the context for this project. A total of 73 students from 8 faculties completed the course. Not only were members of the teaching team drawn from different disciplines (social work, law, nursing, and medicine), nursing and medical students made up the team of PBL tutors. Quantitative and qualitative data collected from the students and tutors indicated that were positive about interdisciplinary education and the benefits of the educational exposure on students’ thinking and socialization. There was some, though insignificant, improvement in the students’ deep approach to learning.

Deliverables

  1. The learning materials of the “Prevention of Family Violence” course has been developed.
  2. The findings are being written up for publication. There was a paper on the adaption of the Readinesss for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) in the journal “Medical Education” detailing its use in a Swedish student sample. We are currently following up on this with a write-up on our experience of using the RIPLS in Hong Kong students.
