Reading Enhancement Scheme with Online Quizzes for Air Pollution and Energy Related Courses

Abstract

The aim of this project is to develop and implement a Reading Enhancement Scheme with the support of scheduled online quizzes for inspiring students to systematically acquire a comprehensive range of knowledge from recommended reference materials. The scheme had been implemented in two courses, one level 2 and one level 3, during the two academic years 06-07 and 07-08. On-line course evaluations have been conducted to collect the opinion of the students towards this scheme immediately after the quizzes. Analysis of the evaluation result indicated that this scheme is better to be implemented to junior students that may have less loading in their studies and also for courses that would cover the whole year so that students can have sufficient time for reading the reference materials. However, the trend of course development in the faculty/university is towards short fat courses that may not be effective for applying this scheme. More studies may be required to see how the effectiveness of the scheme can be enhanced for those one semester courses.

Deliverables

  1. Articulated course outlines and composed online quizzes with multiple choice questions for two courses i.e. a Level 2 course “Fundamental concept in water and air pollution and measurement CIME2001”, and a Level 3 course “Air conditioning and refrigeration BBSE3004”. Multiple choice questions were adapted into the Quiz function of Web-CT6 currently used in the University with appropriate interfacing.
  2. A template and operation manual to facilitate the adaptation of the technique in the WebCT6 environment.
