Global Recognition for HKU’s EdX Fintech Course: A Model for International Collaboration

A leading authority in financial law and technology, Professor Douglas Arner is the founding professor for HKU-EdX Introduction to Fintech in the Faculty of Law. Listen in as Professor Arner talks to our editor Cherie Xu about the global reach and impact of the EdX Fintech course.

Xu: Why is the EdX Fintech course used as a key example when discussing HKU’s global programmes?

Professor Arner: Our EdX Fintech course has attracted over 130,000 participants from 218 countries or regions. This diverse cohort includes professionals from finance and technology sectors, students, as well as central banks and regulators.

Xu: What was the key factor contributing to the success of the EdX Fintech course?

Professor Arner: We aimed to spotlight the advancements in financial technology within China and share our region’s pioneering stories, rather than adopting a conventional Western perspective. By developing a comprehensive framework that integrates both academic insights and practical experiences, we enabled a wide audience to grasp the ongoing developments in fintech.

Xu: Does the EdX Fintech course have global recognition?
Professor Arner: Absolutely. We have collaborated with international experts to translate the course into multiple languages. For instance, we partnered with Kazakhstan’s Astana International Financial Center for a Russian translation and worked with FinTech Saudi to produce an Arabic version. Additionally, we’ve engaged with partners in Sri Lanka and are continuously seeking opportunities to expand our reach further.

Xu: What future initiatives do you have in plan based on the success of the EdX platform?

Professor Arner: Our future initiatives will likely focus on sustainable finance, AI finance, and emerging technologies. I believe in harnessing finance to support sustainable development, particularly by advancing transformative technologies in sectors such as energy, transport, and healthcare.

Xu: Thank you, Professor Arner. The EdX Fintech course exemplifies how technology and finance can be harnessed to support broader sustainable development.
