The HKU Horizons Office will sponsor up to five full-time undergraduate students to participate in MOEI 2024 (https://moei.asia/)

Background

MOEI was originally launched as a credit-bearing experiential learning programme in the Faculty of Social Sciences, HKU in 2008 to provide intensive English-language education for migrant children and adults from Myanmar located along the Moei River section of the Thai-Myanmar border.

 

MOEI 2024

MOEI is now operated under Experiential Learning Asia (ELA) for Universitas 21 institutions. 5 MOEI 2024 Summer places will be available for HKU students to undertake teaching in Mae Sot, Thailand.

Programme

MOEI 2024 (Mae Sot, Thailand) will last for 9 weeks from June 3 to August 2, 2024, consisting of:

  • online preparation sessions held before students travel to project location
  • 1 week of onsite training to provide participants with essential cultural orientation and teacher training for teaching English as a second language.
  • 8 weeks of in-class teaching In-class teaching generally takes place for 3-4 hours per day from Monday to Friday. Class sizes tend to range from 10 to 40, and pupils are often aged about 12-20. Instruction is usually at the elementary or intermediate level. However, there is no typical Moei class, and participants may find that their experience diverges considerably from this description.

Onsite Support

  • 24/7 support from ELA coordinators in Mae Sot, Thailand
  • mentoring/assistance from teacher trainers and local teachers
  • daily transport to/from school

Cost

Participants under Horizons Office sponsorship will have to pay for:

  • HK$18,000, being part of the progamme fee, which will cover, amongst other things, accommodation, breakfast + one group dinner per week, 24/7 support from ELA coordinators in placement location, pre-trip online preparation sessions, orientation workshop in host country, teacher training in host country, mentoring/assistance from teacher trainers and local teachers, 8 week teaching placement, daily transport to/from school, and teaching materials (e.g. photocopying, stationary etc)
  • Airfare
