Enhancement of Core University English Course (CUE) through Development of E-learning Moodle Materials

Abstract

This project aimed to enhance the tutorial discussion skills of students in the first-year course Core University English (CUE) run by the Centre for Applied English Studies (CAES).  CUE is one of the largest courses currently offered at HKU with a total annual intake of approximately 2,800 students. The course focuses on developing Academic English speaking and writing skills needed by first year students in the Common Core Curriculum.  In this project, e-learning materials on Moodle have been developed which include discussion videos by previous A-grade CUE students, related transcripts, interactive online activities, and instructional commentaries.  These materials have been well received by students who used the materials based on an online survey and are now available to all CUE students on the course Moodle site.
