Dear All,

Date: June 30, 2014 (Monday)
Time: 02:15pm – 03:45pm
Venue: Room 315, 3/F, K.K. Leung Building, HKU

About the lecture: The World Bank Group recently adopted two overarching goals – the end of extreme, chronic poverty in the world by 2030 and the promotion of shared prosperity in every society. The lecture will review past trends on poverty, the strengths and weaknesses of the goals, and their implications for policy making, especially in the presence of globalization. Join Professor Kaushik Basu, The World Bank’s Chief Economist and Senior Vice President for a discussion of the age-old debate on growth versus direct welfare interventions as instruments for countering poverty.
