Creating Opportunities for a More Active Online Learning Experiences Using SCORM in Moodle

Abstract

This project aimed at addressing key issues faced by language teachers designing learning materials for delivery within Moodle: limited frameworks for interaction and a relatively poor capacity to integrate digital media into learning pathways. These problems are exacerbated when operating within a Moodle system that must accommodate an extremely large number of users because issues of security and stability prevent the possibility of customization. An addition aim of the project was to develop a core group of teachers within the Centre who were skilled in the principles and practices of e-learning content development. The developers employed an E-Learning content development application, Articulate Storyline, to design SCORM packages which could be embedded into Moodle. The project achieved the aims of developing SCORM packages for a range of different undergraduate English in the Discipline courses, but ultimately it was found that limitations of the SCORM technology prevented these packages from being used for assessment and the process of extracting usage data was hindered by limited access to centrally-managed Moodle system. The project also trained up a core group of teachers who are continuing to develop e-learning content.
