Diverse Learning Experience
Beyond Classrooms in Pokfulam:
Diversifying Learning Contexts for a Third Language and Its Cultures
Abstract
This project looked at ways to refine and expand the opportunities for experiential learning at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC). One of the aims was to document successful (and unsuccessful) initiatives in SMLC and explore whether these initiatives can be applied to all nine languages and their cultures.
A major part of this project has involved the evaluation of all SMLC study abroad programmes, especially the successful summer programmes in Europe. We introduced a standardized questionnaire on learning experiences encountered before and during their stay to students returning from the 2007 summer programmes. One of the crucial factors impacting their decision whether or not to join a summer course was the financial support they receive.
Furthermore, during the 2007-2008 academic year, SMLC organized several international themed events. Internal administrative reports highlighting attendance, resources used and expenditure are put together for each international event. In addition, we have developed guidelines to assist colleagues who are interested in organizing events at the School.
The summer internship programmes have been a significant component of experiential learning in the Department of Japanese Studies. Using the successful Japanese Studies formula, the German Section launched its first summer internship programme with Lufthansa German Airlines in 2008.
