Diverse Learning Experience

Beyond Classrooms in Pokfulam (Part 2):
Experiential Learning Programmes for a Third Language and its Cultures

Abstract

This is an extension of “Beyond Classrooms in Pokfulam: Diversifying Learning Contexts for a Third Language and its Cultures”, a project that was funded in the 2006‐2007 round of TDGs. A major part of this project involved the evaluation of all‐study abroad programmes – summer programmes and exchange programmes – at the School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC). The goal was to use this information to enhance communication both within the School and the Faculty in terms of what individual sections are doing to promote experiential learning in preparation for the introduction of the new 4-year curriculum, as well as to expand further the experiential learning programmes in the School.

As a part of this project, SMLC also organized several themed events focusing on a specific language and its cultures, including German October, Thai Lantern Festival, Hispanic Month and Japan Month, which were attended by over 1,000 HKU students. These cultural events not only gave students a chance to experience foreign cultures at HKU, they also provided an effective means of networking and of generating the publicity essential to creating off-campus learning opportunities.
