Strengthening STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education in Pre-service Teacher Preparation


Abstract

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education advocates an integrative approach to help students better understand scientific and mathematical concepts, acquire the 21st century skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking, and become more able to tackle real-life problems. It has been the highlights of curriculum reforms in Hong Kong and overseas education systems. Nevertheless, the promises of STEM education have always been debatable as schools usually lack an understanding of what STEM actually entails. Consequently it will remain a challenge for the educators to implement STEM education.

This project aims to enhance an understanding of STEM education within and beyond HKU. Through refining the curriculum for the double degree undergraduate BEd&BSc programme, the university instructors and student teachers would have the opportunities to experiment the integration of multiple disciplines in learning and teaching, and to explore how STEM can be effectively carries out in local schools and in partner institutions. A set of recommendations will be shared by different ways to advance the field of STEM education.

Deliverables

  1. Designed curriculum materials using examples of STEM education in schools.
  2. Developed programs for students to experience STEM learning and teaching with the involvement of partner institutions.
  3. Provided enrichment workshop for students with particular interests in STEM education.
  4. Extended the initiative as part of a UGC-funded joint university teaching and learning initiative on STEM education.
  5. Disseminated project findings and recommendations for STEM education locally and internationally in various publications, seminars, workshops and conferences.
