Developing an Experiential Learning Project for Students of Ethnomusicology

Abstract

The goal of this Teaching Development Grant project is to develop a new course for music students that will feature an experiential learning trip to an overseas destination. This course will enable students to acquire first-hand experience conducting basic ethnomusicological fieldwork in a foreign cultural setting. Students will be able to experience various forms of contemporary and traditional musics, and hence draw on ethnographic tools of research to document and record their experiences in systematic ways. The TDG project will firstly develop a viable experiential learning component. Secondly, this project will develop course content and materials to complement the overseas trip.
