TDG – Integration of Bloomberg Professional Services in the Teaching and Learning of Finance

Abstract

The objectives of this project are two-folded: a) integrate the financial market information and analytics of Bloomberg Professional® services to the teaching and learning of Economics and Finance; b) assess the impact of Bloomberg on students’ learning attitude and effectiveness.

The main deliverable of this project is a 208-page Bloomberg User Manual that maps Bloomberg resources to the major topic areas in Economics and Finance: macroeconomic analysis, fundamental analysis, corporate finance, portfolio and risk analysis, and derivatives pricing. Besides the manual, two surveys are conducted to assess the impact of Bloomberg on students. The first one covers more than 700 FBE students who participated in the Bloomberg workshops, while the second one focuses on a small sample of students from two upper-division courses that formally adopted Bloomberg as a teaching pedagogy. Both surveys reveal that a vast majority of students agree or strongly agree that Bloomberg enriches their professional knowledge and experience; stimulates their interest in Finance and Economics; inspires them to learn more on their own; and helps them understand how finance concepts are applied in the real world.
