Academic Advisory System
Developing an Integrated Academic Advisory System for the Faculty of Arts
Abstract
From February 2008 to January 2010, the Faculty of Arts has developed an integrated academic advisory system for Arts students. The Faculty offers academic advising in the form of print and web-based information as well as personal consultations, with a mission to meet students’ needs for information, orientation, guidance and support. The Faculty website on The BA Programme forms the core of the academic advisory system and serves as an interface between the Faculty and School websites as well as relevant academic units and support services in the University. Students are also encouraged to consult teachers, Undergraduate Coordinators for more detailed, personalized advice regarding particular courses, the requirements of a major or minor, and consultations related to formation of academic interest and study plans. Office staff at both the Faculty and School levels advises students on compliance with regulations and graduation requirements. Periodic advising activities have been conducted, which include an annual briefing session on the BA curriculum for first-year students, bi-annual meetings with the Joint Consultation Committee comprising teachers and student representatives, and occasional meetings with the Associate Deans of the Faculties of Science and Social Sciences to share and update advisory plans and practices. Responses received from advising activities as well as online student surveys offered useful input for constant monitoring, evaluation and improvement.
