3D E-models for Learning in Dentistry
Abstract
Modern dentistry is moving towards “electronic patient records” for clinical treatment. In order to support student engagement with the rapidly changing world of digital dentistry, and in order to stimulate the students’ motivation and depth of inquiry, this project aims to incorporate virtual dental models into the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) curriculum, including Problem Based Learning (PBL), Case-Based Learning (CBL), Clinical Simulation Laboratory (CSL), and briefing sessions of Polyclinic. This proposed approach to adopt blended learning gives a potential environment for students to learn more effectively with the mobility and flexibility of the virtual models. It is anticipated that this project will generate new problem stimuli/resources with virtual dental models, the enhanced digital resource bank of learning objects, a personalized online self-learning experience for students, evaluative data on staff and student uptake and engagement, and avenues for cross-faculty collaboration.
