Developing an English-in-the-Discipline course for the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering
Abstract
The TDG project aimed to provide language support to Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering (IMSE) students on oral presentation skills; to provide the basis for the design of the future English-in-the-Discipline (ED) course for the IMSE department and to investigate a possible collaborative curricular-model which can be adopted by other ED courses in the Faculty of Engineering and beyond. A one-hour workshop that aimed to raise students’ awareness of visual aid design and 15 presentation rehearsal-cum-feedback sessions were carried out for this project. The group presentations were co-assessed by staff from CAES and the Co-Investigator of the IMSE Department on the language used, delivery, visual aids and content. This collaborative model can serve as an exemplar for future ED courses. Positive feedback was received in the post-course questionnaires as well as in students’ responses in focus-group interviews. Teaching and learning materials for the IMSE-ED course and detailed assessment criteria have been generated based on this pilot project.
