Language Issues

Promoting Teaching and Learning of Professional Writing in Mathematics

Abstract

This project aims at addressing the problem of students’ weaknesses in mathematical writing, which is common especially among students whose first language is not English, owing to a general lack of such training and learning materials. By a careful study of students’ work in different courses, their problems in writing and the common mistakes they make were compiled into a booklet analyzing the problems with plenty of “real examples” sorted by subjects and topics, as well as providing some general guidelines on how to write properly and avoid those mistakes. Continual revisions and enrichments to the booklets are expected.
