Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills among Nursing Undergraduates by Developing Real Life Scenarios Using Community Dwelling Simulated Patients

Abstract

University nursing education around the world is being challenged for nurturing future nurses who will be able to think critically and communicate effectively in order to meet the diversity of client-based care in hospitals and community. Therefore, apart from traditional lecture-based didactic learning approach, innovative methods such as e-learning, simulations, problem-based learning and experiential learning have been introduced. In the recent decade, there has been increasing recognition of using simulated patients in experiential learning to enhance students’ active participation in cognitive, affective and psychomotor application of what they have learnt from the lectures into real situations. However, there has been lacking real life scenarios with consideration of Chinese cultural and traditional beliefs which may affect nursing care, for examples, complementary of cold vs hot, yin vs yang and strong family values.
