IT in the Curriculum and E-learning

Transforming Problem-based-learning and Clinical Education Curricula through the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) Platform

Abstract

This project aimed to (i) articulate an e-learning position (viz blended learning) through staff engagement and policy statements aligned with Faculty and University e-learning policies, (ii) adopt and adapt the Moodle design as the new BScSHS (Speech and Hearing Sciences) learning platform, induct programme leaders and administrative staff on Moodle functions, and develop e-materials to transition from a paper-based to a digital problem-based learning (PBL) environment, (iii) engage PBL tutors to facilitate face-to-face learning using blended approaches, (iv) develop an e-portfolio (Moodle plug-in) to support student reflection, curriculum coherence and OBASL (Outcome-based Approach to Student Learning) alignment of assessment with programme learning outcomes, and (v) conduct in-depth surveys of students and teaching staff to evaluate project effectiveness. All components of the BScSHS PBL curriculum and most elements of clinical education were implemented in the Moodle LMS during academic years 2014-16. The success of the transformation in delivery mode was verified by results of surveys showing that students’ satisfaction with PBL changed from an emphasis on independent study to group interaction as their experience in the blended learning environment increased, specifically, group interaction beyond the PBL classroom.
