Using Web 2.0 Technologies to Enhance Experiential and Capstone Learning in Different HKU Faculties

Abstract

This project examined factors that support successful adoption of Web 2.0 technologies to optimize students’ experiential and capstone learning activities (e.g., FYPs, group projects, internships). Web 2.0 technologies have been deployed to support group projects and internships. For group projects, customized group workspaces have been set up after thorough consultation with lecturers tailored to the assignment specification. Customized training materials have been developed for each deployment, and were made available to students and lecturers. Hands-on training workshops have been delivered to students before deployment. Students were asked to use the workspaces throughout the duration of the group project as a collaborative project management tool. Perceptual surveys were administered to students at the end of the term, students responded positively, with an average score of 4.7, whereas 4 is the mid-point. Review meetings have been conducted with lecturers, and a lecturer commented that getting students to use wiki “makes them more accountable for their work, because the work they hand in is not only seen by the instructor alone, but also some of the public. I think it is a good way of training students to look at who their audiences are, and what they’re trying to achieve in their research”.
