Nurturing Caring Leaders Programme 2017

Message from HKU Horizons Office

feature-ugcDear Students and Colleagues,

In 2017, HKU will launch the Nurturing Caring Leaders Programme. The Programme, which will be credit-bearing subject to Senate approval, will recruit 100 HKU students to work alongside 50 teenagers drawn from Hong Kong secondary schools and youth organizations. Their joint task will be to deliver English-language classes in marginalized and improvished communities in three Southeast Asian countries: Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand.

The programme will enable 100 HKU students to:

  • gain one week of training in teaching English as a second language
  • teach English for eight weeks in Cambodia, Myanmar or Thailand
  • develop leadership skills inside and outside the classroom
  • engage in mentorship both in Hong Kong and in Southeast Asia
  • understand mainland Southeast Asian through an immersion experience
  • contribute to positive social development through knowledge exchange.

Each participant will receive HK$10,000 from the Hong Kong Jockey Club to support airfare, accommodation and in-country costs. Application period is from November 14, 2016 to January 20, 2017. Details can be viewed at https://tl.hku.hk/horizons/NCL2017.

Two identical briefing sessions will be held to introduce the Programme:

  • Wed September 28 at 3 pm in Convocation Room , Room 218, 2/F, Main Building
  • Mon October 7 at 3 pm in G-07, G/F, Main Building.

All are welcome.

Message from HKU Horizons Office

In support of its internationalization agenda, the University last year launched HKU Horizons, with the specific aim to promote and provide educationally meaningful and robust Mainland and international (ML/INT) learning experiences for undergraduate students.

In order to encourage students to reflect on and share their ML/INT learning experiences, the HKU Horizons Experience Awards have been established. The HKU Horizons Experience Awards competition will be organized annually in January, with a top prize of $10,000 and two further prizes of $5,000 to be awarded.

To enter the competition, undergraduate students must submit a video of not more than three minutes capturing and reflecting on their ML/INT learning experience. Submissions may be made on an individual or a group basis.

Awards will be made on the basis of the substance and value of the learning experience captured, and also the quality of the video presentation. The winning videos, acknowledged as “HKU Horizons Experience”, may be used by the university for promotional purposes, both internal and external. The student producer, individual or group, will be acknowledged as appropriate. The videos may also be refined as appropriate and authorised by the HKU Horizons Committee.

The 2016-17 Round is now open for submission. Further details can be obtained at https://tl.hku.hk/horizons/hkuhea. The deadline for submission is Monday January 23, 2017 (2400).

HKU’s Moei programme was launched in Mae Sot, Thailand in 2008. The initial aim was to enable undergraduate students from HKU and its major international partners to provide intensive English-language classes to Myanmar migrants and refugees. Since then, more than 350 students have taught English in many parts of Southeast Asia. In 2016, Moei will offer English-language programmes in Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand. It will also offer discipline-based programmes in Myanmar.

Message from HKU Horizons Office

Dear Students and Colleagues,

Join Moei and Earn HKU Credits in Summer 2016

The University made a commitment in its Academic Development Proposal 2016-19 to provide “one Mainland and one international learning opportunity” for 50% of undergraduate students in 2019 and for 100% in 2022. The University is now gearing up to meet those targets under the HKU Horizons framework. The first HKU Horizons initiative to be launched will be Moei – in the summer of 2016.

Moei was initially launched by the Faculty of Social Sciences in Mae Sot, Thailand in 2008. The aim was to enable undergraduate students to provide intensive English-language classes to migrants and refugees from Myanmar. Since then, some 350 students have taught English in many parts of Southeast Asia.

In 2016, Moei will offer English-language programmes in Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand. It will also offer discipline- based programmes in Myanmar. Moei is open to undergraduate students from all Faculties, and can be taken for credit in summer 2016.
