Dear colleagues

In 2018 HKU will launch an inaugural Laidlaw Undergraduate Research and Leadership Programme in partnership with the University of Leeds (Leeds) and University College London (UCL) to equip students with research and leadership skills to help them pursue their academic and professional aspirations beyond their current course of study.

This is a prestigious scholarship programme enabling 10 outstanding second- and third-year HKU students to seek research supervision from expert researchers at HKU, Leeds and UCL. As part of the programme, HKU colleagues are invited to supervise high-performing students from the three institutions. Details are available at https://tl.hku.hk/horizons/laidlaw/.

Support required from academic staff members for participating students:

  • Supervision for 8 to 10 weeks during summer 2018 and winter 2018-19 – coaching on delivering a research project and meetings to review learning progress.

Support provided by Horizons Office to incoming students:

  • Pre-arrival student advising including visa application and reservation of on-campus accommodation. Provision of orientation pack including getting around and settling in Hong Kong and HKU.

Scholarship:

  • Free registration for leadership development programme (https://tl.hku.hk/horizons/ldp/)
  • $5,000 (overseas) / $2,000 (local) per week for 8-10 weeks for research attachment
  • $10,000 for laboratory-related expenses
  • $10,000 stipend for leadership development programme and other travel
