Message from Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education
You are cordially invited to attend the following seminar organized by the Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education (IMHSE):
Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2013
Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm (Sandwiched will be provided)
Venue: LG1/F, Room LLG-S5, Laboratory Block, Faculty of Medicine Building
Speaker
Mr Wojtek Dolkowsk, co-founder and CEO, MEDtube online platform (http://medtube.net)
Abstract
Background
Medical education differs from education in other fields. It is more regulated, vulnerable and has not changed too much over ages. It is more traditional and based on books, printed journals, lectures plus typically provided by more conservative teachers. Nowadays the multitude of technologies and availability of new formats as well as the need for improving efficiency are challenging the traditional education system. In 2010 two surgeons from Poland initiated the MEDtube project to improve physician education and communication between professionals globally.
Results
MEDtube platform was launched in mid-2011 and grew to the position of the largest video-centric social network for healthcare professionals worldwide. From the very beginning its founders shared the same philosophy and values. MEDtube ment to be open and for free (after registration) in opposition to traditional sources like expensive journals, books, programs (often unavailable, especially in poor countries). It was possible because MEDtube is based on user-generated content. Open Access is becoming essential to stimulate innovation and eliminate barriers that are blocking (or slowing down) improvement. There is a lot of room and need for new communication tools in healthcare. Aspirations of MEDtube founders are high – to be the largest platform for education and communication of professionals, recognized on all continents. The ambition is to revolutionize the way education is provided and communication between healthcare professionals is happening. There are over 13,000 videos available in all medical specialties (surgical videos, patient examination, lectures, animations, cases, webinars), all peer-reviewed. The MEDtube audience is exceeding 120,000 professionals each month.
Conclusions
Medical education needs to adapt to the changing environment as well as growing expectations of new generations of learners. MEDtube aspires to participate and to foster this evolution. In order to improve medical education and facilitate professional communication MEDtube needs allies – leaders all over the world who understand and share the same views.

CITE Seminar Series 2013/2014
CITE seminar – Tsunami of Educational Technology: Riding the wave
Date: 10 October 2013 (Thursday)
Time: 12:45 pm – 2:00 pm
Venue: Room 101, 1/F., Runme Shaw Building, The University of Hong Kong
Speaker: Sangil Yoon (Sang), Stanford Graduate School of Business
About the Seminar
President John Hennessy of Stanford has warned that a tsunami of educational technology could change the landscape and role of American universities. With Stanford launching new MOOC platforms (i.e., Coursera, Udacity, NovoEd, OpenEdX) and offering dozens of free open online courses, the Stanford Graduate School of Businesses (GSB) decided not to stay on the sidelines of what many are calling a learning revolution. Two years ago, the GSB’s Academic Technology Services (ATS) group began its transformation of capabilities and capacities under the Technology in Pedagogy initiative. In this seminar, Sangil Yoon (Sang), who leads ATS, will discuss the group’s journey in developing the team, technologies, and facilities that have enabled the School to offer a variety of new programs (i.e., MOOCs, flipped classes, online custom and open certificate programs, executive education through HD video conferencing).
About the Speaker
Sangil Yoon (Sang) is the Associate Director of the Academic Technology Services group at the Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB). Reporting to the GSB’s CIO and Associate Dean, Sang is responsible for leading the 20 person Instructional Design & Technology, Research Analytics, and Media Services & Classroom Technology Services teams.
Sang has extensive experience with e-learning and systems management in higher education. He holds three degrees from Indiana University – Bloomington: a B.S. in Business Operations Management and International Business, and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology. Sang’s research and recent teaching centers on emerging e-learning delivery models, including MOOCs, blended courses, and distance education via HD video conferencing. Previously, Sang served as the Office of Online Education’s Instructional Design Coordinator at UNLV. In this position, he managed a portfolio of 300 plus online courses and a professional development program for faculty and staff.

Chi Wah Learning Commons is a campus hub for student-centered learning activities. It is for use by HKU staff and students only, and NOT open to the public.
During the summer holiday, a project to install automated access gates at all entrances to Learning Commons was undertaken. The gates will not only help us to monitor usage of the Learning Commons, but also enable us to collect better information helping us to plan for future needs.
We will activate the gates on opening the Learning Commons on the morning of September 30th, 2013 (Monday) and from that time you will need your staff card or student card to access the facility.
Please note that any visitors to the Chi Wah Learning Commons will need to arrange their visit with the Learning Environment Services Team in advance at ithelp@hku.hk.
If you experience any difficulties, both Learning Environment Services and Security Staff will be on hand at each of the entrances to provide you with help and assistance.

This seminar discusses rationales and approaches for using learning technologies on campus to engineer an engaged student experience. It begins by exploring contemporary forces shaping campus-based higher education, looking in particular at the influence of learning technologies. I then unpack the concept of student engagement, drawing on theories and findings from a decade of large-scale research in Australia and abroad. I conclude with suggestions for how academic and support staff can use learning technologies to enhance students’ engagement in campus-based higher education.
